Enrolled member of he Sault Ste Marie Chippewa tribe, Hailey-Jade Araujo, recently graduated from Endicott College, with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and a minor in Art Therapy. Hailey-Jade has found a love for expressing and exploring her Native culture, while painting memorial portraits and working with issues of identity as a Native woman growing up in mainstream America. She is asking the question, “What does Native American culture look like in 2022?” Her pieces combine classical oil painting techniques with traditional Native beadwork on canvas and panel board.
At the end of the day, the work I enjoy the most is the work that connects me with my Native heritage. The beadwork and paintings all stem from a rich childhood of being immersed in my Native culture.
